Description:

The Hammer-headed Bat is a megabat that feeds mainly on fruit such as figs. Nevertheless, it is also known to capture birds. Its cranium is large and square, with a prominent rectangular-shaped muzzle (for which it is named). Although its dentition is heterodont, its teeth are all fairly similar. The incisors at the front of its mouth are small and cylindrical in shape, and are followed by canines that are larger than the other teeth, and a set of triangular molars. This dentition allows it to ingest fleshy fibrous fruit. It has 28 teeth and its dental formula is as follows: I 2/2, C 1/1, P 2/3, M 1/2.
