Collection of Large Blocks

Name Collection of Large Blocks
Description This collection was begun in 1905 by Norbert Font i Sagué (1873–1910) and consisted of 133 large blocks of rocks placed in the Ciutadella Park around the Martorell Museum. The rocks came from the some of the most important quarries in Catalonia and included mainly specimens of calcareous rocks and porphyries, along with other rocks such as marbles, basalts, gypsums and slates. Although the collection was destroyed in 1929, the Geological Museum still preserves a small part of each specimen (155 examples). In the 1940s, the collection was reconstructed into 32 blocks by a number of Catalan naturalists. In 2003, the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Barcelona City Council organized the restoration of the collection and a renovation of the explanatory panels. Currently, the exhibition consists of 33 large blocks of rock distributed around the façade of the Museum, along with a number of basalt columns placed in the sides of the outer entrance as they originally had been.
