Since 1925 part of the collection from the Royal Academy of Science and Arts of Barcelona has been held in deposit by the Museum. The petrological collection consists of 1143 inventoried samples from all over the world. As is to be expected, samples from Europe predominate (around 900 samples) due to its proximity. More specifically, there are 524 samples from Spain, of which almost half are from Catalonia. This collection was created by expert collectors such as Jaume Almera i Comas (rocks mainly from France), Artur Bofill i Poch (metamorphic rocks from Barcelona), Ramón de Bolòs i Saderra (volcanic rocks), Eduard Fontserè i Riba (a variety of rocks from all over Spain), Carles de Gimbernat (mainly volcanic and Italian rocks), Antoni Llobet i Vall-Llosera (American, Africa and European – above all France and Spain – rocks) and Joan Artur Maliban i Autet (volcanic rocks from the Canary Islands). Lithologically, of note are the volcanic rocks (343 samples), including a large selection from La Garrotxa and a collection of lava medallions struck by Carles de Gimbernat from lava from Vesuvius. There is also an important collection (142) of carbons. |
