The micropalaeontological collection, one of the most remarkable scientific collections housed in the MCNB, is composed essentially of fossil foraminifera. The stable research program called «Architecture, Biostratigraphy and Palaeoecology of Larger Foraminifera» is the main source of material, but the historical collections (such as those of Vidal and Villalta) as well as some new adquisitions (such as that of Josep Serra-Kiel, acquired in 2018) also contain micropalaeontological specimens.
In December 2019, this collection is mainly composed of more than 4,000 elements (rocks and special preparations such as thin-sections and levigated material) with milions of specimens. The localitites are from the Jurassic to Miocene, especially Cretaceous and Paleogene, of European countries (Spain, France and Italy), but also of localities of other countries such as Mexico, Oman and Iran. |
