Description | Collection of dry shells originating from the historical expeditions led by the Barcelona Natural History Museum to western Morocco (1921-1932). It consists of 790 specimens grouped into 71 lots, of which most correspond to continental fauna (only five lots of marine molluscs). Numerically, the most important groups are those of the families Helicidae and Hygromiidae (70% of lots). The collection includes samples collected by Joan Baptista d’Aguilar-Amat, Pius Font i Quer, Ascensi Codina and Santiago Novellas. The material includes the type specimens of Chondrina klemmi, described by Edmund Gittenberger. The whole collection has been registered, documented and digitalized to specimen lot level. Data from a part of the collection can be consulted on-line at the website of the Barcelona Natural History Museum and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility website. |
Provenance | These specimens originate from the campaigns carried out in western Morocco by the Barcelona Natural History Museum in 1921–1932. Amongst the collectors, there were eminent scientists such as Joan Baptista d’Aguilar-Amat, Pius Font i Quer, Ascensi Codina and Santiago Novellas. Under the direction of Artur Bofill i Poch (1891–1929) and then Joan Baptista d’Aguilar-Amat (1929–1936), the Museum’s malacological section was reorganized: the collections were combined and the nomenclature revised, but the original labels were conserved. Subsequently, and thanks to a revision of the Chondrinidae carried out in the 1970s by Edmund Gittenberger, the species Chondrina klemmi was described using material from this collection. Francesc Uribe has been the curator of the Department of Non-Arthropod Invertebrates since 1997 and since then the inventory and digitalization of the Museum’s whole collection has been carried out to specimen lot level. |
