Description |
The Museum's petrology collection is comprised of rock specimens from many regions (more than 14,000 recorded entries), a collection of thin sections to study rocks through a polarizing microscope (more than 6,000 thin sections), and a collection of 33 large stone blocks on display outside the Martorell Museum (the Old Geology Museum). The rock collection also contains a sub-series of about 100 examples of sands.
The collection dates back to the earliest days of the Museum, at the end of the 19th century. It has continued to grow thanks to the fieldwork carried out by the Petrology Section and to donations from institutions and external sources. |
