The collections held by the Barcelona Natural History Museum consist of geological, botanical and zoological specimens and material from the Salvador Cabinet. Currently, the Museum works as a consortium consisting of the Generalitat de Catalunya (the Catalan Autonomous government) and Barcelona City Council; nevertheless, the collections are wholly property of Barcelona City Council and their contents are stored in various different buildings in the city.
All the Museum’s collections are open for scientific research. Material from the collections can also be used for external exhibitions and other cultural activities. Scientific consultation takes place in the Museum’s own installations: in the Castell dels Tres Dragons (Castle of the Three Dragons) in the case of the zoological collection, in the Museu Martorell for the geological collection and in the IBB for the herbarium and Salvador Cabinet. Consultations should be made by agreeing on a day and time with the curator in charge of the collection.
Part of the collections are on display in the l Museu Blau in Barcelona and form part of the permanent display “Planeta Vida”.
For more information on the conditions of access and consultation, visit the website of the Barcelona Natural History Museum o de Barcelona Botanical Institute (IBB).
All the articles, either scientific or of any other nature, that are published with information gathered either wholly or partially from the material in the Museum’s collections must acknowledge the source, i.e., the Museum, and a copy of the work must be sent to the Museum.
